In this course, participants will learn some basic concepts about scientific integrity and good scientific practice, particularly in the biomedical field. The course consists on 6 different modules: 1. Introduction to research integrity 2. Data Management 3. Conflict of interest 4. Animal research 5. Human research 6. Practice and politics of publication

This course will introduce some concepts on research integrity and will help participants to reflect on their own research practices and point them to some resources that can help them make better science

Duration:  24 hours ( 6 weeks)

End:  31st December 2023

Target audience and previous knowledge recommended: 

The course will be more relevant for people who come from a scientific background (and especially from the field of biomedicine).


Course Objectives: 

To understand what research integrity means in a practical way, what is considered research misconduct, and what are the best research practices to ensure an ethical, robust and reproducible research – including the specific cases of research using animals and human data.



  • Module 1: Scientific integrity.

In this module, students will learn what is considered misconduct, the frequency of the different misbehaviours among the scientific community and their consequences.

  • Module 2: Data Management.

In this module, students will be introduced to the importance of planning and record keeping and learn about some tools and tips to keep track of their work in a reliable way.

  • Module 3: Conflict of interest.

In this module, students will learn about different types of conflicts of interest, and reflect about their potential effects on research, as well as how they could be dealt with in the best possible way

  • Module 4: Animal research.

In this module, students will learn some facts and figures about animal research, current guidelines and will explore the main arguments for and against animal testing.

  • Module 5: Human research.

In this module students will review the history of human research, learn how the current standard and guidelines emerged and discuss about some ethical issues regarding experimentation with humans.

  • Module 6: Practice and politics of publication.

This module will deal with the what, why, how, who and where of scientific publishing as well as seeing an overview of the current publication system.


Maruxa Martínez-Campos

She has a degree in Biology (University of Barcelona) and a PhD in cell biology (University of Cambridge). After working as an editor in Genome Biology, an Open Access journal, she moved back to Barcelona. There, she is in charge of digital media and scientific affairs at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), where she also coordinates the Good Scientific Practice working group and the Diversity, Equality and Inclusion committee.

She is an associate professor at the University Pompeu Fabra’s Department of Medicine and Life Sciences.

Eva Casamitjana

She graduated in Biology from the University of Barcelona. She moved to the Netherlands where she obtained a PhD in Developmental Genetics at the University of Utrecht in 2003. After postgraduate training in international cooperation, she worked for several NGO’s with a primary focus on health where she gained specific training in international cooperation and some field experience.

She joined ISGlobal as a Scientific Coordinator in 2008. Since 2021 she is also an Associated Professor at the University Pompeu Fabra’s Department of Medicine and Life Sciences.
